북극곰 - Polar Bear 본문
북극곰(학명: Ursus maritimus)은 북빙양과 그 부속 바다 및 주위 육지를 아우르는 북극권에 널리 서식하는 육식성 곰이다. 흰 털 때문에 백곰(白-)이라고도 부른다. 북극곰은 자신과 같은 육식성인 코디악곰(Ursus arctos middendorffi)과 함께 세계에서 가장 큰 곰 중 하나이며, 두 종의 크기는 대략 같다. 성체 수컷의 몸무게는 대략 350 ~ 700 kg(770 ~ 1500 lb), 성체 암컷의 몸무게는 그것의 절반 정도이다. 북극곰은 불곰과 밀접한 관계가 있으나, 몸의 특성이 추운 기후에 적응하고, 눈과 얼음과 물을 가르며, 기각류를 주식으로 삼는 등 보다 협소한 생태적 지위를 갖도록 진화했다. 대부분의 북극곰은 땅에서 태어나지만, 태어난 뒤에는 대부분의 시간을 바다에서 보낸다. 학명 Ursus maritimus는 “바다의 곰”이라는 뜻으로, 바로 이 점에서 유래한 것이다. 북극곰은 해빙의 한계 부근에서 기각류를 주로 사냥해 잡아먹고, 해빙이 없을 때는 보존된 지방을 태우면서 살아간다.
The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is a hypercarnivorous bear whose native range lies largely within the Arctic Circle, encompassing the Arctic Ocean, its surrounding seas and surrounding land masses. It is the largest extant bear species, as well as the largest extant predatory carnivore. A boar (adult male) weighs around 350–700 kg (772–1,543 lb), while a sow (adult female) is about half that size. Although it is the sister species of the brown bear, it has evolved to occupy a narrower ecological niche, with many body characteristics adapted for cold temperatures, for moving across snow, ice and open water, and for hunting seals, which make up most of its diet. Although most polar bears are born on land, they spend most of their time on the sea ice. Their scientific name means "maritime bear" and derives from this fact. Polar bears hunt their preferred food of seals from the edge of sea ice, often living off fat reserves when no sea ice is present. Because of their dependence on the sea ice, polar bears are classified as marine mammals.
Because of expected habitat loss caused by climate change, the polar bear is classified as a vulnerable species. For decades, large-scale hunting raised international concern for the future of the species, but populations rebounded after controls and quotas began to take effect. For thousands of years, the polar bear has been a key figure in the material, spiritual, and cultural life of circumpolar peoples, and polar bears remain important in their cultures. Historically, the polar bear has also been known as the "white bear". It is sometimes referred to as the "nanook", based on the Inuit term nanuq.
